I can remember a time in my life when Christmas was simple—elegant but simple. It seems that the older I get, the more complicated the Christmas season becomes. The shopping, the wrapping, the decorating, the parties, the special services, the overall hustle and bustle of it all can be quite distracting. However, I have a simple solution that will get your heart and mind back on the right track. Even though the parties, shopping, decorating, and busyness don’t stop… your perspective will be different and, therefore, the Christmas season will be simple again and you will remember why you loved Christmas so much in the first place.
Ready for my secret? Here it is in three parts: relax, reprioritize, and reflect. It is real that simple, trust me.
Relax- Yup, in spite of everything you do during the Christmas season takes some time for just you. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, just sit down and watch your favorite Christmas movie or cuddle up with a good book and some coffee. Make sure you also take the time to have the whole family relax. Maybe it is as simple as taking the time to read a “The Night Before Christmas” or watching “Elf”, but getting the family together is vital.
Reprioritize- Please remember that you don’t have to go to every Christmas gathering in town. I’m not saying that you should go all Ebenezer Scrooge on your community, but be wise and pick which festivities you really want/need to attend. Remember, too, that double booking your parties is a big No-Go so plan ahead and make a calendar keep everything in line. Yes, even schedule in your relaxation time so that you do not bypass it.
Reflect- Obviously, I saved the most important of the three for last. Take time to reflect on the family/friends, the warm home, possessions, and community that make your every day worth while. Most importantly take the time to reflect upon the true meaning of Christmas; the birth of our Savior, Jesus. I encourage you to daily read all or a part of the real Christmas story…watch movies that showcase the true meaning and always communicate that meaning to your family.
It really is that simple guys and gals so go ahead relax, reprioritize, and reflect the Christmas season.
