Are you having trouble getting those creative juices flowing? Well, welcome to the club. As graphic designers and anyone else in the media industry, we have those moments where nothing we do seems to be creative, out of the box, fantastic. With that being said here are some things that I have found to be excellent ways to get those juices flowing:
Put pen to paper! Go ahead and sketch, write, doodle, or scribble. There are no limits so don’t be afraid to express. No one ever has to see it. No one needs to know about the stacks of sketch pads hidden in your closet. This is your time to create. If we can’t be creative here, we are in the wrong profession.
Ready? Aim. Fire! Yup, you read it right. Grab that camera and shoot something. Nature, people, sports, architecture, or textures. It doesn’t matter what you shoot and shoot often. These photos can be used for your stock library later so you will still maintain productivity. Go ahead!
Order a medium! No, I don’t mean a coffee (even though it would be nice) but an art medium. Paint, sculpt, sew, or create in another form. It can be anything as long as you can free your mind.
Take a hike! I mean it. Go. Take a walk…a jog…a run…anything. Get your bootie up and away from the glorious world of adobe for a bit.
Start a jam session. If you are at all musical, then go ahead and play your little heart out for a bit. If you aren’t musical, put on your favorite tune and sing like there is no tomorrow.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that we all need to find a way to rejuvenate our creative thinking and the best way to do that is to get your mind off of that particular project for a while. Even if it is just for a few minutes step back and I promise that you will come back with new and fresh creative ideas.
Now about that coffee….
